Established in the Lebanon more than a century and a half ago, Chatila is rare among jewellery houses in that the name over its doors is still the name of the family that owns and runs it. George Chatila began the business as a silversmith in 1860, whereupon his probity and skill made it flourish. It is the third and fourth generations of the family – Nicholas Chatila and his three sons, Marwan, Edward and Carlos – who now continue in the founder’s footsteps. Nearly fifty years have passed since the firm relocated to Switzerland. The move brought with it an abundance of fresh ideas and new designs that have proven extremely popular with the Chatila clientele. Today, Chatila’s flagship showroom in Geneva, in the Rue du Rhône, is a trusted venue for the discerning client who seeks a rare item of nonpareil magnificence. Chatila’s other principal showroom, established in 1987, is in London’s Old Bond Street. This attracts celebrities and visitors from abroad, who on occasion shop by appointment to ensure discretion with their purchases, while many others are drawn to the jewellery by the spectacular window displays. A new showroom, in Riyadh, opened its doors in 2003, and another, in Doha, is set to follow suit in 2014. The Chatila family favour a participatory approach to business, dealing personally with clients, overseeing the styles of jewellery created in its workshops and supervising the quality of workmanship before any item becomes available for viewing. All members of the family take part in the process of selection and valuation of unique or rare gemstones. The 57 carat “Rangoon Splendour” ruby, the legendary “Hapsburg” 87 carat D Flawless diamond, the “Indore Pears,” each approximately 45 carats, and the “Archduke Joseph” 76 carat rectangular cushion-shape diamond, are some of the historic gemstones to have passed through their hands of late. At the present time Chatila has in its vaults one of a mere fistful of the world’s known red diamonds, as well as another historic gem: “The Burmese Excellence”, an oval-shaped ruby weighing 61.37 carats. This stunning deep-red ruby is set into a magnificent bangle design, teamed with diamonds and ruby beads. Like every art, the jeweller’s art is in the details. Every tiny detail in a piece of jewellery must be so perfectly conceived and executed that the pleasure of wearing a Chatila heirloom may be visited upon successive generations of its owners. With decades of experience behind them, our craftsmen have perfected their talent for handling the most sophisticated and complex settings for beautiful jewellery. Though the stones that they use – from sea-deep sapphires and purest emeralds to luscious rubies and dazzling white or coloured diamonds – are always desirable in themselves, it is the ability of the craftsman to adapt his skills to the contemporary taste in each individual design that ultimately brings these magnificent jewels to life.
