“I took my first steps into fashion when I re-designed my school uniform at the age of ten. Allowing me to change the school’s standard gingham summer dress to a unique one of my own design in buttercup yellow (which I wore teamed with a cute little white cardigan!), an understanding headmaster allowed the first shoots of creative self-expression to take root. I fell further in in love with art at secondary school. Not your typical rebellious teenager (apart from the red spiky hair), I stayed behind to draw and create – drawing, sculpture, fashion and textiles all intrigued me. What I love about millinery is that it allows me to continue to pursue these passions equally. Making headpieces and hats fuses the design element of fashion with the fun of playing with fabric and textures in three dimensions: milliners are the fashion world’s sculptors. Although my collections take inspiration from Britain’s fashion heritage and the natural world – Cornwall is particularly helpful here! – my bespoke service means I get to work creatively in collaboration with clients looking to make the headpiece of their dreams, to their specifications. These women inspire me to continue to create, to think and to design pieces which make the wearer feel like I did as I basked in the buttercup glow of my first creation – my yellow dress.” Graduating in Costume Design for the Performing Arts from the London College of Fashion in 2006, Holly lived and worked in London for five years before moving back to her roots in Cornwall. Whilst studying, she interned with the English National Opera Millinery department and on graduating worked for avant-garde milliner Justin Smith. She then went on to work for top milliner Philip Treacy producing headwear for Paris and London couture fashion weeks.
