How to care for your denim

(and make it last longer)

Kelly Harrington, a brand consultant, trend forecaster and denim expert who has worked with brands like Lee and Wrangler, shares her top 10 tips to help your denim look its best and last for longer.

Wash Less
You can aim for between 5-10+ wears, unless visibly dirty.

Spot Clean First
Dab stains with a damp cloth or baking soda paste before resorting to full washes.

Turn Inside Out
Always zip/button up and wash inside out to preserve colour and prevent fading.

Cold, Gentle Wash
Use cold water or a 30°C cycle, a gentle cycle and mild detergent.

Low Spin
High-speed spinning damages fibres and accelerates wear.

Refresh Without Washing
Steam or use antibacterial spray to freshen.

Skip Fabric Softener
Use white vinegar instead to soften and preserve colour.

Stretch While Damp
Gently stretch inseams after washing to maintain shape and minimise shrinkage.

Air Dry Only
Never tumble dry. Air drying preserves fit and fabric strength.

Store Folded, Away From Sunlight
Fold and keep in a cool, dark place to maintain shape and avoid fading.
