There is nothing quite like Belmacz. Launched in May 2000 in London to show one of a kind gems, today Belmacz is located in a Regency townhouse on Davies Street, opposite Claridges, Mayfair. Belmacz shows unique jewels created by Julia Muggenburg, alongside contemporary art, ancient objects and artifacts side by side the state-of-the-art Belmacz cache of balms, glosses, powders and eye colours with 24ct pure gold leaf. At Belmacz Gallery, an annual exhibition programme rotates between solo and group shows. The gallery is set up to facilitate dialogues between art and Belmacz gems, show casing current topics on varying subjects. The two-story space is a platform for emerging and well established contemporary local and international artists. Julia Muggenburg's keen interest in innovative artists of today drives her to seek artwork that strikes her as interesting and a catalyst for change. Growing up in Düsseldorf, Germany, Julia moved to London to study fine art at Central Saint Martins. Muggenburg created her first jewels to fulfill her need for sensuous, architectural and iconic objects. Rooted in ancient craft traditions yet boldly contemporary, Belmacz jewellery evokes a twenty-first century take on the status-affirming ceremonial adornments worn by tribal chiefs, patriarchs and paragons of style. “Empowering primeval-modern ornaments for today’s cool, intellectual, urban warrior,” wrote Vivienne Becker (journalist for the Financial Times and jewellery historian) describing them. Redefining such universal forms as the ring, the cuff, or the necklace, Belmacz pieces are Julia Muggenburg’s form of expressing the contemporary, refined spirit. Gems are created to enhance the wearer's sense of empowerment, sense of self and give a tangible sense of joy.
