"I was so happy to find they had opened up a store in my neighborhood. The store has a real sense of playful adventure while still maintaining a range of wearability for the everyday cool girl-slash-woman." -Kim Gordon Since Jade Lai founded Creatures of Comfort Los Angeles in May 2005, the store has been widely considered a haven for those seeking hard-to-find labels with standout personalities. In the fall of 2010, Creatures of Comfort customers on the East Coast were excited to learn that Jade had relocated to New York City to open a store and debut the Creatures of Comfort in-house line. The Creatures of Comfort flagship store, a beautiful 2300 square foot space at 205 Mulberry Street, opened for business in September 2010. 205 Mulberry St "The New York store, on Mulberry Street, is impressively spacious, and feels distinctly more upscale than the neighborhood's scruffier boutiques. The bright, airy space has high ceilings, exposed brick and raw woods, with a small glassed-in courtard." -Ken Miller, NY Times, April 2011 While walking down Mulberry Street in the spring of 2010, Jade encountered a "For Rent" sign in the window of 205 Mulberry-the former police precinct building and rumored inspiration for the 1971 film "The French Connection." In the 30+ years since the police precinct closed, 205 Mulberry had been used as an office. Though the space had drop ceilings, tiny windows, carpeted floors and small boxy rooms, Jade saw enormous potential. Drawing on her background in architecture and environmental design, she devised a plan to execute her vision of a raw minimalist store at 205 Mulberry. The interior was gutted to reveal gorgeous original detailling, including wood floors and tin ceiling panels. To brighten the space, Jade added large windows and a patio garden. She enlisted the talents of Brian Zimmerman, who built the store's modular wood furniture, and CONFETTISYSTEM, which created a beautiful curtain of chiffon fabric scraps to conceal the storage room.
