Spencer Hart completely evolved out of music, film and old-school Savile row and sartorial traditions. Music gives style an edge. John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, David Bowie, Paul Newman , Sidney Potier, all these kind of guys – they went for a kind of pared down, very sharp, very cool, monochromatic aesthetic, but they’d subvert these classic looks with quite subtle differences. This period was so stylish, not so much because of what the clothes were, but how they photographed in Black and White.
